I love pizza.
In elementary school, my parents promised me Pizza Friday if I got 100% on my weekly spelling test. Our first non-pizza Friday was the first Friday of junior high. I was not a happy camper.
But it wasn’t until a fairly serious relationship with pizza while I was in Rome that I realized that there was more to life than pepperoni and Hawaiin. Yes, I like pineapple on my pizza.
Unfortunately, finding it in LA was not so easy.
Until it was.
The first time I walked through the glass doors into Settebello Pizzeria Napoletana in Pasadena, the rich, familiar aroma transported me right back to Italy. Looking at the menu, I spotted it. When you know, you know. And baby, let me tell you, I knew! I’d just found the best artisan pizza in Los Angeles.
So what does Rome taste like?
To me, it’s creamy, gooey Mozzarella; salty, thinly sliced Prosciutto Crudo; green leafy arugula and a spongy yet crispy hand-tossed crust blasted in a blazing wood-fired oven.
The Pizza Bianca – or White Pizza – was everything I hoped it would be and more. I’d like to say that my mouth only watered the first time I ordered it, but I think we both know better by now.
I usually pair my Bianca with a glass of Pinot Grigio, but when I like to mix things up a bit, I go with an earthy red from Montepulciano.
The large wood-fired oven keeps the restaurant warm and cozy, while the low hum of conversation mixes well with the Italian music from overhead speakers. Take a look at the back corner of the restaurant, and you’ll see an old silent Italian movie projected onto a blank wall.
As you can probably tell, Settebello is ideal for date night, catching up with friends or Happy Hour.
Now before you ask, yes, they have many other types of pizza, and yes, they have a full bar with liquor, wine, and beer.
Oh, and their desserts? Holy smokes, do yourself a favor and leave room! My favorite? The Panna Cotta with vanilla bean cream, strawberry glaze and a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette. Seriously though, you’ll thank me later. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture – somehow I always forget to take one before I dig in – but I’ll leave you with more pics of other delizioso options!
Whether I’m people watching at a table by the window or sitting at the bar, there are two things I can always count on: amazing pizza and friendly service. Since I’ve been there a few, ok ok, more times than I can count – no judging – I’ve made friends with the servers and the manager Vinny.
Say hello and tell him Star Wars customer Monét sent ya!
